Gay Kagoshima

Buzz-R has been part of Kagoshima’s gay nightlife for almost 20 years, and this small men-only bar packs plenty into its cosy space. There’s a DJ booth, music, visuals and karaoke, plus a surprisingly big drinks menu covering cocktails, shochu, draft beer and even Jägermeister on tap.

The crowd ranges from locals to visitors from elsewhere in Japan, with plenty of solo drinkers dropping by.

Bar Lollipop brings a splash of Candyland to Kagoshima, with colourful décor inspired by sweets and a toy shop. It’s also relatively spacious for the city, with karaoke, drinks and plenty of room to chat with the staff or settle in with friends.

The crowd tends to skew younger, around their 20s and early 30s. Lollipop is mixed on weekdays, then switches to men-only on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before public holidays.

WHARF KAGOSHIMA is a small gay bar that opened in 2022, offering a laidback place for drinks away from the bigger nightlife spots. Owner Yuta is happy to chat and help visitors get settled, including international guests. The drinks list has a good selection of Kagoshima shochu and Japanese whisky, with reasonable prices.
